The AARP Smart Driver™ Course is the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed specifically for older drivers. For more than 40 years, millions of participants have used the program to update their driving knowledge, sharpen their skills, and remain safe behind the wheel. Nearly 500,000 older adults complete the course each year.
The course provides practical, research-based strategies to help drivers navigate today’s roads with confidence. Participants learn about the latest vehicle safety technologies, how health and medication changes can affect driving, and techniques for reducing crash risk. The course also explores safe ways to share the road with pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists.
AARP continuously updates the Smart Driver curriculum to reflect current state regulations, emerging transportation trends, and the newest safety research. Recent enhancements include information on roundabouts, alternative intersections, mental focus while driving, transportation alternatives, and advanced vehicle safety features.
In addition to helping drivers stay safe and independent, completion of the course may qualify Utahns for a multi-year auto insurance discount. The class is $20 for AARP members, $25 for nonmembers and can be paid the day of, in cash or check. Bring your driver’s license and AARP membership number.
