Asthma Back-To-School Preparation

9.19.2025

Is your child with asthma ready to go back to school? Kids with asthma will likely be exposed to more triggers at school like pollen, seasonal viruses (such as the common cold or flu), and other triggers that happen more often while being at school. The best thing to do right now is schedule a visit with your child’s doctor before school starts and together, make sure your child’s medication is updated. It’s also important to fill out and sign an asthma action plan that lets your child bring their own medication to school and self-administer the medication when it’s needed. The asthma action plan is a great way to make sure that you, your child’s doctor, and your child’s school are all on the same page.

Don’t forget to ask the school nurse or administration if they stock asthma inhalers. Utah passed a law in 2019 that allows schools to stock asthma inhalers at the school in case of an emergency.

Going back to school is a busy time and for a lot of kids, it’s also a very exciting time. Make sure your child is ready to have a great year by helping them manage their asthma.
