NAMI Utah offers free help and it’s just a click or phone call away.
Every year, thousands of Utahns learn to cope with and heal from mental illness through the power of the community surrounding them. People often don’t realize that, in addition to the support of professional clinicians, peer support from people who have been in similar situations can have life changing results.
“Research shows that time after time, the power of support from peers is key to the healing process,” said Robin Holcomb, executive director of NAMI Utah.
NAMI Utah is part of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to bringing hope and healing to anyone affected by mental illness, including those looking for help with their own illness and family members supporting them.
NAMI’s courses, support groups and presentations are evidence-based, easily accessible and free. In addition, NAMI Utah offers free suicide prevention trainings, advocacy trainings, and the support of a HelpLine.
Utah’s mental health challenges are well documented. According to a 2025 study by the Utah Women and Leadership Project, “Utah holds the second-highest percentage of adults (29.9%) living with any mental illness, not far behind Oregon (30.2%).”
NAMI Utah is working to erase the stigma around mental illness and to help Utahns find the support and education they need.
“I have a renewed sense of hope and control in my mental health journey,” one person told us after participating in our support groups.
Another said, “I have never been part of a more understanding, positive and helpful group of people, it has been literally lifesaving. Some weeks, attending a group keeps me from giving in to despair.”
“Navigating mental illness is tough on those facing mental health challenges as well as their families. At NAMI Utah, we hear every day that the power of peers has given Utahns across the state hope during very difficult times,” says Holcomb. “If you’re not sure what kind of help you need, call our HelpLine. We’d love to help you find resources that will help you.”
One of NAMI Utah’s greatest challenges is that people don’t know about their free resources. To address this, the agency is developing three new affiliates throughout the state this year, doubling their NAMI memberships and on target to reach more than 6,000 people through education, support and advocacy efforts.
